Top 5 PCCs for Home Defense

When a 9mm pistol-caliber carbine is your home-defense gun, the spec that matters most is not the trigger, the rail, or the brand — it is whether the gun feeds hollow points, every single time. A recent breakdown from Frontier Arms ranked the five compact 9mm PCCs with zero feed failures in their testing, and the results cut across every operating system on the market.

The ranking

#5 — CZ Scorpion 3+. A direct-blowback gun that proves a simple action can still be dead reliable when the feed geometry and magazines are right.

#4 — CMMG Banshee MkGs. CMMG's radial-delayed blowback runs soft and suppresses well, and the MkGs feeds from Glock-pattern magazines — a combination that kept it failure-free with defensive hollow points.

#3 — Springfield Armory Kuna. The roller-delayed Kuna is the newcomer on the list, pairing a delayed action with straight-feed magazines for smooth, reliable cycling.

#2 — SIG Sauer MPX K. A short-stroke gas piston gun with AR-style controls; the piston system keeps it running clean and consistent, suppressed or not.

#1 — B&T APC9 Pro. The same platform the U.S. Army selected to replace its MP5 fleet takes the top spot — refined feed geometry, excellent magazines, and a track record that speaks for itself.

The real lesson: feed geometry beats action type

The through-line of the ranking is that no operating system — direct blowback, radial-delayed, roller-delayed, or gas piston — guarantees reliability on its own. What actually decides whether a short-barreled PCC chokes on hollow points is feed geometry and magazine design: how the cartridge is presented to the chamber, and whether the magazine holds it at the right angle every round. Every gun on this list, whatever its action, got those two things right.

Before you trust any PCC for home defense, run your actual defensive load through it — several magazines' worth — and confirm it feeds clean. If you are shopping for one, the CMMG Banshee MkGs builds in our store are a good place to start, and we are happy to talk through the options in person.
